What is Moonchild Skunkworx?

Moonchild Skunkworx is the snowboard lab and sub-brand of Moonchild Snowboards. It started as an experimental playground for unique shapes and riding experiences on snow. Over the years, it has grown into a dedicated sub-brand focused on hybrid boards, which can be ridden either bindingless or strapped in.

Skunkworx represents a truly new category in snowboarding, combining innovation and experimentation to help make snowboarding exciting again.

Key benefits:

How does Moonchild Skunkworx innovate powsurfing access?

Traditionally, powsurfing requires hiking or touring to reach deep powder. Moonchild Skunkworx developed systems to simplify access and reduce gear needs.

Options for approaching powder:

• Snowshoes: efficient for short hikes or repetitive laps; Moonwalkers can transform into traction pads for bindingless riding

• Splitsurfs / Splitboards: best for longer tours, efficient glide, and energy-saving

• Approach skis: a middle option; good for climbing but bulkier to carry

• Lift-access with hybrid boards: ride bindings on lifts, hike short distances, then switch to traction pads for bindingless powsurfing

Hybrid boards and pads allow riders to adapt instantly, enjoy powsurfing without investing in a separate board, and make the most of unpredictable snow conditions.

What is the difference between powsurf, snowboard, and a hybrid snowboard?

Powsurf:

• Completely bindingless, relying on balance and foot placement

• Offers pure flow and freedom in powder

Snowboard:

• Ridden with bindings, providing control for lifts, groomers, and freestyle

Hybrid board:

• Can be ridden with bindings or bindingless using traction pads

• Switching between modes is fast and easy, even mid-run

• Lets riders adapt to conditions without needing multiple boards

What products does Moonchild Skunkworx offer?

Moonchild Skunkworx offers innovative hybrid snowboarding gear, including boards and traction systems that enable both snowboarding and powsurfing experiences. All boards are premium quality, handmade by us in Europe.

Products are available as:

• Complete hybrid sets (board plus traction pads)

• Board only for traditional snowboarding

• Traction pad system only for use with an existing snowboard or splitboard

We recommend buying the board and pads together, as boards are shaped to perform best for both snowboarding and powsurfing. Check each product page for current stock availability, as production is in smaller batches. If a product is not in stock, it is being built to order and can be reserved by contacting us or directly from order / pre-order page.

Product details and how they work

BLVCKBIRD with Moonwalkers: ride as a snowboard with bindings, switch to bindingless powsurf mode, or use Moonwalkers as snowshoes. One board, multiple experiences.

Atlas Hybrid with Raptor Pads: tour uphill in splitboard mode, surf bindingless with Raptor Pads, or ride with bindings. Ideal for longer backcountry exploration.

Moonwalkers Traction Pads: best-selling system for bindingless powsurfing and short snowshoe hikes, seasonally updated for peak performance.

Raptor Pads: designed for splitsurf/splitboard users; provide grip for bindingless powder riding and smooth transitions.

Disruption: versatile snowboard for carving and powder; one board for multiple conditions.

Why don’t Moonchild boards have special base channels like some powsurfs?

Moonchild boards do not include base channels, which are designed to help riders rail through turns especialy in shallow powder or soft snow. While channels are good for shallow powder, powsurfing is best in deeper snow, where the true feeling of surfing on snow is realized.

Powder recommendations for Skunkworx hybrid boards:

• Gentle terrain: at least 10 cm (4 inches)

• Steeper terrain: at least 20 cm (8 inches)

Benefits of no channels:

• Feels closer to real wave surfing, more maneuverable

• Allows use of fast sintered bases, easy to wax and scrape

• Works for carving on groomers in snowboarding mode

• In shallow snow, ride in bindings mode for best performance

Environmental and cost benefits:

• One hybrid board replaces the need for an extra powsurf board

• Reduces material use and environmental impact

• More affordable since one board can cover all conditions

Where do you ship products?

Moonchild Skunkworx ships globally, including EU countries, Norway, Switzerland, and the USA. For shipments outside these regions, contact support for options. Import tax for US shipments is covered by us for a hassle-free experience.

Shipping costs

Costs vary by product and destination. Exact costs are displayed at checkout or on each product page.

Returns and warranty

• Boards: 2-year warranty against manufacturing defects

• Traction Pads: 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects

Warranty does not cover normal wear, misuse, or damage from inappropriate terrain. Proof of purchase is required.
