03 Powsurfing: The accessible alternative to snowboarding

One of the many reasons powsurfing has been gaining popularity so quickly in recent years is also its accessibility. We all know that snowboarding gear is expensive and continues to rise in price each year. On the other hand, getting into powsurfing requires much less. Warm clothes, snowshoes, and a wooden plank are often enough to get started.

Gear requirements for powsurfing

You don’t need specialized boots to begin; if you own a pair of snowshoes, they can work just fine. In some ways, snowshoes can even be more beneficial than snowboarding boots, as they provide greater ankle freedom and comfort. Of course, as you progress, you may want to upgrade to proper powsurfing boots. However, there aren’t many on the market yet, and some riders opt for snowboarding boots instead. I believe there will be more powsurfing boots available in the coming years. But the beauty of this sport is that you can start with what you already have at home. Even snow goggles aren’t a necessity, as speeds are usually lower than in snowboarding, especially when you’re just beginning.

DIY 0ptions and cost savings

By contrast, snowboarding requires purchasing a board, bindings, and specialized boots before you can even start. Additionally, if you’re handy, you can make your own powsurf by bending and shaping wood or repurposing an old powder board into a powsurf setup. These DIY options provide an inexpensive way to experience the first thrill of powsurfing and get a feel for the sport.

Avoiding resort costs

Another significant cost-saving factor is the lack of reliance on ski resorts. The long-term expenses associated with snowboarding—such as lift tickets and travel costs—often surpass the price of equipment. Lift tickets have become disproportionately expensive compared to the cost of gear itself. However, if you live in a snowy area with accessible hills or streets, you can step outside and ride without worrying about these extra costs.

Converting your existing gear

For those who already own snowboards or splitboards, there is an alternative solution. By adding traction pads, you can convert your existing board into a powsurf setup without having to buy a new board. Check out Moonchild traction pads that fit your powder splitboard here: Raptor Pads, and for powder snowboards, here: Moonwalker Pads.

Powsurfing vs. snowboarding

In general, powsurfing is more like skateboarding in terms of accessibility, whereas snowboarding is more akin to skiing. The freedom, cost-effectiveness, and DIY possibilities make powsurfing an exciting and growing sport for anyone looking to ride the snow in a new way—even for skiers!
